Apparently I am well traveled, not so!

Last week I took my first trip to Amsterdam to see one of our favourite stockists 290 Square Metres.

Ido, the store’s founder and creative extraordinaire and was hosting an evening for the store’s female clientele – yep it was ‘Ladies Night’.

I packed two looks from SS13 as gifts to raffle on the night, and then gave a bit of background on Studio Nicholson.

290 Square Metres is literally 290 sqm of lifestyle at its best, from the latest Nike specials on sneakers to organic Swiss granola. It’s a carefully curated mix of heartwarming products.

I think what really impressed me (apart from the warmest welcome ever) is the store’s interior which is much like a giant set of Jenga blocks mixed with some very beautiful pieces of furniture. It feels like the space is constantly on the move.

Amsterdam – I will be back soon.

Boys Week FW/13

I have been glued to style.com for approximately ten days watching the menswear shows and work has been kind of slipping as a result – whoops. It’s a definite highlight for me on the fashion calendar – no surprise. I have to say though the lines are ever more blurred between menswear and womenswear and I have no problem with that. I would buy a ton of these looks if they would only fit my curves and many of them would not look out of place in our own FW/13 collection.

Menswear for me is really where fashion meets functionality and the offering this season is seriously luxurious and complete. I keep going back to Muccia Prada’s collection where she says ”Simplicity is so difficult. To make perfect something that is normal and classic is much harder.” She is right – ‘no fuss design’ is complex.

Here’s the pick of the best in my opinion, those racing snake hipped men are pretty easy on the eye too – enjoy! x

It’s been a while, time disappears. I have re-committed to making one post per month, let’s see how we get on shall we?

Right now I am fully immersed in finishing The Winter 13 collection and it is my favourite season to design as I get to use more complex materials, weights and textures.

Enough of that, I wanted to share some Summer 13 with you – or more specifically the workings behind a Studio Nicholson collection.

Below are inspiration boards from my first look tear images which sets the tone of the collection, initial style sketches through to product… ta da!

Blues In May

Blue, was there ever a colour so important and so regal?

For me it’s the core of each Studio Nicholson collection, more likely because every men’s collection is grounded in blue. It is a colour that I never tire of exploring, the most well thumbed pages in my pantone chip fabric specifier are the pages from periwinkle blue to dark blue blacks. Blue quite literally charms the pants off me and calms all when the world seems awry. Its a colour that is rooted firmly in menswear.

This month Lord Snowdon and Acne have collaborated on an exhibition ‘Snowdon Blue’ of sixty portraits and a limited addition book inspired by the blue shirts in Snowdon’s photographs. Acne has created a limited collection of men’s blue shirts that you will find at Dover street this month before the exhibition moves on to Paris, New York and Stockholm.

Our Spring Summer 2012 collection is a smorgasbord of Indigo’s and Blues, inspired by holidays with my family in North Devon – specifically my Grandfathers beaten up ‘Boat Coat’ with its faded indigo liner.

Getting Dressed With The Boys.

Hello! Welcome to my very first journal post.

Lets start at the beginning; my beliefs behind the brand Studio Nicholson are simple. Take a clean masculine silhouette and feminise each piece in cut and fit. Always use quality cloth and insist on the best make and finish. Above all – keep the design pure and know when to put the pencil down!

When it comes down to it, I have been using this formula for years, both as a designer and every time I get dressed.

For me masculine dressing is a two-fold art; start with a masculine silhouette and add subtlety. And that’s the point in the fashion quirk, it should be sensitive and look effortless.

My wardrobe only houses what I consider the essentials; perfectly cut shirts, pants and jackets. Dressing with a masculine philosophy makes me feel confident and I like the unfussy approach to selection. My quirk? I like to leave one too many buttons undone.
