Our new classic canvas plimsoll is produced in collaboration with Moonstar Japan. Founded in Kurume, Japan in 1873, MoonStar originated as a producer of the tabs (Japanese traditional footwear which is like a five-fingered sock with a rubber sole). These days Moonstar are best known for their own brand ‘Shoes Like Pottery’. Somehow I managed to convince Sachiko at Moonstar to produce a shoe for us.
There’s something utterly naive in the silhouette of this shoe with its double toe cap, it reminds me of my play shoes I had in the seventies. Moonstar fire each pair of sneakers in a kiln, giving the sole a uniquely flexible and highly durable finish. The upper is crafted from Kurume cloth that is hand woven on an old style loom in Hataya providing a supple weave with a unique texture.
The design comes in three tone on tone colour ways, Navy, Natural and Sand. I personally haven’t worn anything else since we took our first delivery in January 2015 - naturally I have a few pairs on wardrobe repeat.
