Modular Tradition - Studio Nicholson & Hereu

Year-round dressing doesn’t stop at the ankles. Shoes need to remain in the frame, which is the rationale behind the Studio Nicholson & Hereu collaboration for Pre-Fall 2021. An alliance of design and shoe-making expertise, both brands have come together to create two stand-out footwear styles engineered to be worn by men and women.

Made from supremely soft but sturdy Italian veg-tanned leather, the Fisherman Sandal and Slide have been masterminded for seasonless wear. Fully prepped for pavement pounding or sandy beach sauntering, they work equally well bare foot, or with chunky (or fine gauge) socks. The substantial proportions are deceptively lightweight thanks to the sole unit manufactured from a dense high-tech foam, which is finished with rubber to maintain strength and durability.

With a bold, generous and amplified silhouette, the woven cage-straps are inspired by the lobster pots and fishing nets of the Mediterranean Sea. Made in Spain, there’s a playful nostalgia to both styles that’s reminiscent of childhood shoes from the past – something that Barcelona-based Hereu have successfully managed to capture across all of their collections since first launching in 2014.

The alliance between Studio Nicholson & Hereu has enabled both styles to be produced in small, limited batches by local shoe-making artisans and experts who work hard to keep traditional crafts alive. Sandal and Slide represent a novel new addition to the modular wardrobe and offer the wearer a more purposeful, practical and undeniably comfortable footwear option. Technical touches, such as a high-quality Velcro fastening on the Sandal ensure the aesthetic feels modern and entirely unisex – which falls perfectly in line with the Studio Nicholson determination to design timeless pieces that work for everyone, regardless of age, shape, size or gender.
