A maxi dress is characterised by its length, typically falling to the ankle or just above the floor. The proportion creates a continuous line through the body, allowing fabric to move freely. In structured cotton or fluid jersey, the effect remains the same. Elongated, considered, and quietly directional.
Length should feel deliberate rather than excessive. A designer maxi dress should sit just above the ground, allowing ease of movement without dragging. When worn with flat shoes, the hem should clear the floor. With a slight heel, it may fall longer, but the silhouette should remain uninterrupted.
Luxury footwear should support the line of the garment. Minimal sandals maintain openness, while leather shoes or boots introduce structure. Clogs add volume, particularly with wider silhouettes. The choice is less about occasion and more about proportion.
Natural fibres require a measured approach. Cotton can be washed gently and reshaped while damp to maintain its structure. Linen benefits from air drying and light pressing to restore its surface. Both materials soften over time, developing a more relaxed character with wear.
